Snow Biking in Japan

cycling training on snow with road racing bikes with studded tires

Mt.Tokachidake (Mt.Tokachi) 57

Temperature: minus 12 degrees Celsius at the Tokachidake Hot Springs (Tokachidake Onsen).

Maximal velocity: 79.0km/h

Because of a depression, the south-east wind was very strong and the temperature was high. A foehn phenomenon made the temperature higher. The road was covered densely compacted snow or hard ice as it didn’t snow for a week. At 1100m of altitude, a super strong blast made skid the bike. He barely resisted to the blast not to be taken away. As it didn’t snow for a week, the snow surface was covered with crusted snow. The crusted snow was blown off and hit his face. The hard crusted snow was hurting. He continued his interval training at the summit after wearing the ski goggles to avoid the hard snow. He saw an aged man was blown off by a gust at the summit. Fortunately he had no injury. He met the group of Swedish skiers that he had met during Mt.Tokachidake 56. They told him they wouldn’t ski this day as the wind was too strong. The descent was fast thanks to strong back wind.
